The Causes of Relapse

Seemingly Irrelevant Decisions (SIDs)

Relapses most often occur when you make a decision that you think will not matter or that you convince yourself will not matter.

Such decisions are triggered by one or more of the following eight mental attitudes:

Triggers/Attitudes:

  1. Overconfidence: “I’ve been doing well and I’m not really tempted.”

  2. Wanting to be Normal: “I just want to do what other people get to do.”

  3. An Apparently Legitimate Reason: “This is not about wanting to look at pornography. I have a good reason for looking at this site.”

  4. An Unexpected Source of Temptation: “I was being careful but this temptation came at me from an angle I was not expecting.”

  5. Promising to do Just a Little Bit: “What I am going to do will be so small or brief that it will not matter.”

  6. Anger and Self Pity: “I’ve had it!” “I’m feeling sorry for myself so I just don’t care.”

  7. Not wanting to be rude, offend or Disappoint Another Person: “It would just feel socially awkward or rude for me to walk away from this situation.”

  8. Celebration: “I’m on an emotional high for some reason and being careful just doesn’t seem important.”

3 Nephi 18:18

Behold, verily, verily, I say unto you, ye must watch and pray always
lest ye enter into temptation; for Satan desireth to have you, that he may sift you as wheat.

Note: I'm sure, at some time, I have relapsed using all eight of the above triggers.
