Fasting Without A Reason

There is a lot of truth to the phrase "Fasting without a reason is just starving."  While on my mission, my companions and I never had a problem coming up with reasons to fast.

I find that it is more difficult to fast if my only reason for fasting is because it is "Fast Sunday."  Think about it, you wake up Sunday morning and realize that it is Fast Day.  Wow, you are already half way through with your fasting and you didn't even know you were fasting.  For me that's not very satisfying.

I find I am more in tune on Fast Sunday if I decide on a "reason" or several reasons.  I then begin my fast some time Saturday with a prayer and explain to God why I am fasting.  Then do the same some time during the fast, and then again before I break the fast on Sunday.  Those are the best days.

Those of us trying to overcome our addictions should likewise never have a problem coming up with a reason to fast.  If not for ourselves then for a family member or someone in the group who is struggling.

I you have no other reason, fast for me.  I can use all the help I can get.

One additional thought: It is also very appropriate to fast to express gratitude to our Heavenly Father.
